Plagued by dry skin? These products helped me get the moisture back!
In the past few weeks my skin has been feeling progressively drier, something I’m rather unfamiliar with. I kind of always assumed my skin would stop producing teenage amounts of oil as I got older, but since I’m only starting to reach the mid 20s range it’s caught me unprepared. It could be due in part to my efforts to quash the hormonal acne I’ve been plagued with in the past few months, but a lot of what I do is spot treating so logically it shouldn’t dry out my entire face. Right? *crickets chirping*
In the past week I’ve been especially diligent in choosing products that are more suitable for dry skin. I had one particularly miserable day where I went to work and my face felt so dry all day all I could do was pray for the end of the day so I could run home, remove makeup, and slather on a thick layer of the richest moisturizer I could find. After that day of miserable discomfort I’ve also put a few of my previous favorite makeup and skincare products on hold. They’re much more suitable for the combination/oily skin I was used to. I’ve certainly felt more comfortable in my own skin since I changed up my routine. Sad to see the old favorites go but I’ll have them on hand if my skin has another bipolar phase!
After a good bit of research and taking advantage of free Sephora samples, here are the skincare and makeup bits I would recommend for anyone battling dry skin in the midst of summer.
When the boyfriend goes out of his way to say, “Damn, you look great today. I think it’s the makeup,” you know you’ve got a keeper. I pulled out the ol’ Naked palette while I was getting ready for work and I guess I picked a winning combination! Nine times out of ten my makeup is quite soft and neutral, very work appropriate, and this is no exception. Of course when I got to work the air conditioning was malfunctioning so the effort to look presentable hardly seemed worth it… it’s quite impossible to exist as anything other than a sweaty mess in the middle of summer in Florida with no A/C.
But I digress. In the end the A/C was fixed and everyone stopped sticking to their desk chairs. A happy ending for all!
These beautiful blushes have been out for ages, but I thought I’d throw my two cents into the mix of opinions! I am a self proclaimed blush addict. My first piece of makeup was a blush, and the Tarte Amazonian Clay Blushes are neck and neck with NARS for my favorite blush formula of all time. When these were first released, all of the shades were matte. Due to their popularity the color range has been expanded and now includes some lovely shimmery shades as well! The three I have for review today are the original matte formulation in the shades Exposed, Natural Beauty, and Blissful.
Yes, the title is slightly weird, but this video contains one of my favorite quotes ever. He’s asked, “Where’s Waldo?” His reply, “I don’t know, probably off with Carmen San Diego laughing about all the socks they’ve stolen from my dryer.”
I like to listen to BBC Radio 1 when I wake up in the morning and they’ve been playing this quite a lot. To me, this song is perfect for blasting in the car when you just want a moment to get away from it all.
Since I am such a new blogger I always appreciate tips from those who have managed to make a career out of it. LBQ covers all kind of topics that don’t always get talked about, and I appreciate her blatant honesty and genuine enthusiasm for what she does.
In the same vein, if you also appreciate kitten cuteness and you have a Twitter, how are you not following Emergency Kittens??? They post lots of adorable photos that make any stressful day a hundred times better.
Sunscreen! It’s one of those products that everyone knows they should wear on a daily basis to prevent signs of aging as well as skin cancer, but many of us don’t like it. Common gripes against sunscreens are smell, greasy texture, causing breakouts, and leaving a white residue on the skin. I’ve been wearing sunscreen everyday since I was about 13 years old. I’ve gone through many different kinds over the years, but the UV Clear by EltaMD is the one I’ve stuck with since I found it. Previously I had only ever used chemical sunscreens. The “sunscreen” smell had always annoyed me and when I went through my skincare routine after working out the sunscreen started to sting my skin, so I wanted to try a physical sunscreen.
Time to share with you the products I’ve used up over the past few months! Empties videos are some of my favorites to watch on YouTube so I thought I’d try it out as a blog post. If you’ve used up something until you’re scraping the sides of the bottle, chances are you can give a pretty good review! Plus, who doesn’t love rummaging through someone else’s trash? (There’s the touch of sarcasm by the way. It’s rather hard to convey in writing.)
Right off the bat I would like to state how seriously impressed I am by this formula! They are without a doubt the most hydrating gloss I have ever tried. The moisture really sticks around, even after the high shine wears off. They also give a good dose of color and I think the lipstick bullet shaped packaging is rather clever.
There are 20 shades total. There’s a nice color selection available with several neutral pinks, some brights and some darker shades. I wish they would add a few more peachy pinks to the line; their Celestial Coral is not what I would call coral although it is a nice color. The shades don’t always translate on the lips the same way they look in the tube either. The two I have for review today are 065 Caramel Infusion(left) and 080 Captivating Carnation (right).
I get plenty of emails each day advertising sales on this and that. When I see a particularly good one I like to share with all of you! These posts are not sponsored and I have no affiliation with any company.
Folica.com is an excellent site for all things hair related. I’ve purchased my beloved SuperSolano hair dryer from there as well as a handful of styling products. I’ve always had a good experience ordering from them and they have frequent sales that allow you to save on tons of high quality brands! I especially love Folica for their Top Ten lists. If you’re looking for a new [insert hair product here] they’re likely to have a good recommendation for you with lots of reviews to back it up.
Currently they have two promotion codes running now, plus a handful of free gift with purchases. You also get free shipping on any order over $50 within the continental US. They offer international shipping as well but it can get quite pricey.
SALE30 Save an extra 30% off sale items. Hair BOGO items excluded.
20PLUS Save 20% off all orders and receive a free Sedu Compact Styler on orders over $65, plus free shipping. Some brand exclusions apply.
Here are some of my favorite products available on their site:
SuperSolano Professional Hair Dryer I believe this is the updated version of the one I currently have. It dries my hair faster than any dryer I’ve ever owned and leaves it silky smooth!
BlowPro Faux Dry Dry Shampoo Hands down my all time favorite dry shampoo. The application is a bit odd at first but the product works wonders on greasy hair and is easy to brush out so you’re not sporting the grandma look. (Unless you are a grandma of course!)
I feel like the Effaclar Duo has a very love/hate following. On one hand, it definitely works to get rid of acne. On the other hand, La Roche-Posay is usually a brand that caters to more sensitive skin and this is one product that has managed to irritate even my generally tolerant skin.
As I understand it, there are two versions. The version sold in the US is more concentrated and meant to be used as a spot treatment; the version available in the UK and Europe is more dilute and can be used as a spot treatment or an allover acne treatment. As I live in the US, I have the more concentrated version.
The promises of glycolic acid in skincare sound almost too good to be true: softer, smoother, younger and clearer looking skin? Sign me up! I had been interested in trying a glycolic acid treatment for a long time but I never knew which one to go for. After discovering Beautypedia and spending far too many hours reading product reviews I finally settled on this one by Acne.org, and the results have been fantastic.
I am by no means getting to the stage where I’m overly concerned with the signs of aging, but I do subscribe to the “prevention is better than treatment” theory. The main benefit I was hoping to get from this product was acne related. As I’ve gotten older my skin has definitely started to change from oily to combination/dry, but I still have frequent breakouts. I also switched birth control methods to a low hormone option. While I’m happy with the switch in all other respects, I now have to contend with hormonal acne. This type of acne shows up on either side of my chin, along my jawline, and some under my chin (which I have never had before and it grosses me out). It’s also generally cystic and can be painful.
